MONTICELLO — Sullivan County is asking a judge to set aside a $2 million jury verdict in a Child Victims Act case involving abuse suffered by a former foster child while in the county’s care.
The county filed a motion Aug. 10 seeking a new trial and asking the court to set aside the award of economic damages. The motion follows a July 24 verdict in favor of the plaintiff, identified in court records as N.R.
The case was tried before Sullivan County Supreme Court Judge Meagan K. Galligan.
The county’s notice of motion says its request is supported by an affirmation from Deputy County Attorney Khalid Bashjawish, exhibits and a memorandum of law. The motion is scheduled to be heard Aug. 25 at 9:30 a.m.
A supporting document filed by the county was temporarily made unavailable to the public after the court found that it contained the plaintiff’s unredacted name and directed the county to correct its submissions.
The county previously said it intended to appeal the verdict. It declined to provide further comment at this time.
